ISLANDERS FOR RESPONSIBLE EXPANSION (IRE) is a grassroots organization dedicated to raising awareness of the impact development has on the natural beauty and resources of James Island and Folly Beach.

Our goal is to provide Islanders with the tools we need to protect ourselves against irresponsbile development. Together we can take action and stand up for our way of life and the home we love.

IRE ACTION ALERT: August 6th CAMP ROAD LIVE OAKS:

On Wednesday, May 14th, RoadWise presented its plans to "improve" the intersection at Camp and Folly.

The intersection is now a grade F intersection. RoadWise's plans would cost $6 million and cut down 28-41 of our grand oaks.

If this project is completed, the intersection will still be a grade F. According to RoadWise, it would simply be a "better F."

There are simple, effective alternatives to the RoadWise plans – alternatives that can solve our traffic problems and save many live oaks. Please click here to learn how you can join us in asking RoadWise to modify its plan.

Saving Morris Island - IRE's Letter to the Editor

Preserve the Unspoiled Natural Treasure of Morris Island

Together with your help, IRE gathered 659 signatures in just 8 days to support the "No Development" option for Morris Island, as well as the lowest development option for the tip of Folly.

In addition, Charleston County Parks and Recreation received 151 surveys submitted through the CCPRC website and public workshops. Project Manager Julie Hinsley confirmed that the "overwhelming majority" of these surveys were opposed to any docks, restrooms, or boardwalks on Morris Island.

We are asking CCPRC, Mayor Riley, and developer Bobby Ginn to listen to the people of Charleston. Our input is clear. We like Morris Island just the way it is, and we neither need nor want the proposed amenities.

Developer Ginn, please let CCPRC buy this strip of Morris Island from you WITHOUT requiring taxpayers to build a dock, boardwalks, and public restrooms. Please let us pay you the $4.5 million WITHOUT any strings attached.

WALMART UPDATE – April 24th

Newkirk Environmental has officially withdrawn its permit application to fill in 3.88 acres of wetlands for a propsed Walmart Supercenter.

This makes the second time Walmart has withdrawn an application for plans to build a supercenter on James Island. Both times Walmart has met with massive public outcry.

The people of James Island and Folly Beach ask Walmart to be a good neighbor. Please don't chop down our trees and fill in our wetlands for something we don't want. Please remodel your existing store instead.

NOTE: Walmart Supercenters make an average of $64 million dollars more PER YEAR than regular Walmart stores. They want a bigger store on James Island regardless of what we want, and they will not give up without a fight.
